That's right, I've waited until now to go out and even try to get a Nintendo Wii. Why? Doesn't matter. The point is; I refuse to wait in line for most things anyway. Let alone in front of Target or Toys 'R' US.
So while the rest of the video game industry journalists attempt to entertain you buy proving how hardcore they are by camping out for first chance at a next generation console. I will attempt the opposite. In fact, I just may attempt a complete opposite role on this site, chronicling the events of an industry-connected, newb console player, and its affect on my otherwise normal life and those sharing this life around me.
I'm sure we'd share great conversation and all...
I waited as long as I could, and almost a year after the console's launch, I was a little surprised to find Nintendo still hadn't caught up on manufacturing, causing the Wii to be a bit challenging to find in stock anywhere - even now. So I was happy that a friendly retail store clerk tipped me off on a Sunday shipment happening this past weekend. So I figured I'd go for it. But I refuse to stand in line. The challenge worthy of a Sunday morning coffee drive, and I took it.
um... is it worth it?
Here's the set up: After learning of the initial retail shipment, I then proceeded to call every store in my area. All pretty much said the same; "We're out. But there MAY be some on Sunday morning". One nice kid actually went as far as saying, "There MAY be 24 on Sunday". A good tip. I called three targets, Best Buy, Sears, four GameStops, CompUSA and a Walmart. All pretty much the same response. The earliest store opened at 8am - Target. Best Buy opened at 10am. I figured if all the Targets had lines, I'd enjoy driving around with my half-caf coffee and John Coltrane cd until 9:45 and hit up Best Buy. Can't be a line everywhere, could there?
I fled lines at two Targets, one at Toys "R" Us, and noticed one person at Best Buy lingering around, before I stumbled upon a Target that was already open, and it didn't seem to have much mayhem taking place. Without having to get out of the car at the other locations, I decide to actually park, walk into a store and take a chance - swearing if I saw more than 3 people standing near each other anywhere I'd turn right around - and boom. No line, 4 Target kids unpacking Wii boxes, and my pick of whatever I want. "Two Please".
My couch sounds better.
How excited am I? I was so excited that when I got home, I sat and tried to finish Bioshock on my Xbox 360 (if the damn PC version would work, I would have finished that FPS weeks ago). The Wii still sits in its box, next to the extra controller and the copy of Tiger Woods also purchased. All still in their bags.
Oh, I'm excited... I just have a problem starting something new before I finish something else. In fact, I've been thinking about the entire event of my first purchase of not only the new Nintedno Wii... BUT MY FIRST NINTENTDO PRODUCT EVAR!!1!!
So that said... I promise I will be hooking it all up very soon. In addition my plan is this to chronicle my entire experience, from start to finish. Hence my place on this new site.
See you on the news.
