I remember being at the Square-Enix press conference in 2006, when the Wii was unveiled. This resulted in a strange moment in the conference when Dragon Quest Swords was announced and it got a huge pop-- far huger than anything else related to Dragon Quest. "Wait," I thought to myself, "this is just because it's a Wii sword-slashing game, isn't it?"

Dragon Quest Swords shipped in Japan back in July. Reviews of the import in Play Magazine and NGamer UK were... uh, not positive, to say the least. (Bear in mind that in order for Play to be negative about a product, it needs to cause some sort of terminal illness or lingering injury.) Famitsu, on the other hand, gave it a 33/40, but those jerks thought Blue Dragon was a good game, too. Regardless, Square-Enix is hyping up new features for the American release on February 26 (and I bet an overhaul of the difficulty level).

So the US version might be better... or not, it can be hard to tell when Square-Enix opts to give a game a facelift during localization. Check behind the cut for some footage from the Japanese game and judge for yourself.

So is it just me, or is Toriyama's design work a lot more inspired than usual in these character designs? There's a little less "So which Dragon Ball character is he redrawing in fantasy clothes?" going on here.

Words can scarcely describe how badly I want to play this game. But I'm using them anyway.

Its pretty cool this is getting released in the US, but wake me up when DQ4 for DS gets officially announced.

DQ Swords didn't get a fair deal from some news outlets because they weren't really understanding what the game is. Just like the DQ Monsters titles, it's not a full, all-out RPG. It is what it is.

That being said, since it is what it is, I think it would be better priced at the $39.99 or $29.99 price point in the U.S. It's still a title that I would probably like to have on my shelf.

Yeah, to be honest, all I really want out of Dragon Quest Swords is "something I can play with my husband", and he freaked out just at the description of it. If motion control gets him playing stuff like this and Resident Evil, then all hail the Wiimote.

I played the demo at S-E Party 2007, and thought it was quite fun. Of course, I just played one level, and it was a pretty strict on-rails shooter-- er, "slasher," but it did what it did and it was fun. Of course, maybe it doesn't hold up to lengthy play sessions, but from the sound of it, this seems like another instance of the "hardcore" game reviewer misunderstanding the "play" concept that pervades Wii games.
