It's telling that Chrono Trigger is a game held in such high regard that even the announcement of a simple enhanced port for the Nintendo DS is enough to make the internet explode with crazy. Right now exactly what the new features will be is a little vague, but here's the relevant snippet from the press release that WorthPlaying is hosting:

  • Taking advantage of the Nintendo DS hardware, Chrono Trigger makes its way onto the portable platform with all-new dual screen presentation and Touch-Screen functionality
  • A brand new dungeon and a Wireless Play mode adds exciting new dimensions to this timeless classic

We should have Chrono Trigger DS in our hot little hands by "Holiday 2008"-- which probably means Q4 or possibly late Q3. I wonder if it'll get re-translated?

Well I've gotta say I'm interested, as this will be my first opportunity to play the damn thing. Basically unavailable for SNES + Infamously Shitty PlayStation Port = DS Version Yay.

I happened to like the PS port of Chrono Trigger, thank you! But, this certainly does make the DS look more attractive now. ^^

This is great news for those who don't own Chrono Trigger in any form. I still have my Snes cart of Chrono Trigger and to be honest I can't quite get as enthusiastic as most people have about buying the game again. Based on the past Final Fantasy ports, I'm expecting the "bonus Dungeon" to be pretty underwhelming. But like I said, if you haven't played it before this is a perfect opportunity.

You know what would actually be a really awesome bonus feature? Radical Dreamers being included as well. Seriously. I think the Earth would probably explode though if Square ever did something that big for a remake.

If Square were planning to include or even eventually release Radical Dreamers, they should go all out and plan on Chrono Cross too. Then, while they're working on all three games, fix the script inconsistencies between the games and do a little touch up so the entire combined story makes a little more sense to the average person.

That, or just release a port of Chrono Trigger with an extra dungeon.

But like I said, if you haven't played it before this is a perfect opportunity.

Yeah, this is honestly perfect for me since I never got a chance to play it in the SNES games (back when new games were rewards for good report cards and $80 was a lot of money for a game that wasn't FF3) and since college I don't really have the time to dedicate to RPG-length console-gaming.

So the DS is my Happy Friend System nowadays, and I'm excited about finally getting the chance to discover this classic game for myself.
