The Lowdown: Sonic Chronicles is BioWare's first DS RPG and their first co-production with Sega. The game is in most respects a traditional RPG, but attacks have action/timing elements that must be mastered if you want to do big damage to bosses. Every character has unique traits to bring to the game's exploration sections, from Sonic's speed to Amy's ability to smash rocks, and most of the gameplay can be managed with just the stylus.
The Hype: With reportedly over 30,000 words in the game, Sonic Chronicles has a dense story and promises to bring some well-loved characters into the hands of one of the top Western RPG developers. Playing Sonic Chronicles doesn't feel much like a traditional Sonic game, but the character writing is both totally spot-on and entertaining.
The Snark: What Sonic fans have complained about for years is having to play games that aren't really Sonic games. Sega's response? "Here, have a Sonic BioWare RPG."
Anyway, some screens of the level used as the E3 demo behind the cut.
