The Lowdown: Not a reboot, not a spin-off, not a sequel, not a "new interpretation": Mega Man 9 is a straight-up 8-Bit Mega Man game, with a new series of Robot Masters to battle and Dr. Wily's castle waiting at the end. Only now you can buy items to make your journey a little easier, and there may be other unknown features waiting as well...

The Hype: It's a real Mega Man game after far too many years of lousy pretenders running around in Mega Man's clothing. The authentic 8-bit graphics just make it funnier.

The Snark: A lot of the sprites look suspiciously like re-edited sprites from old games...

Bonus: Things That Killed Me When I Played Mega Man 9

  • Spikes
  • Pits
  • Giant Robot Elephants
  • Cannons
  • Robot Birds
  • Stuff Dropped by Robot Birds

8-Bit screens await behind the cut.

"Not a reboot, not a spin-off, not a sequel..."

It is indeed a sequel (the "9" at the end is fairly strong evidence of such) and a long awaited sequel at that. As a huge fan of the Mega Man and Mega Man X games, its about time they have gotten back to the basic game play that made Mega Man famous in the first place. The Battle Network stuff they have been focusing on lately is only a shadow of what the franchise can/should be.

Now if only they would follow this with a new 2D Mega Man X title, with huge detailed sprites and an expansive series of worlds to explore Metroid/Castlevania:SotN style... ah, to dream...

Do you get to choose all 8 stages from the beginning in this? The lack of ability to do so in MM7 and M&B really annoyed me.

I assumed she meant a sequel "series" (a la the X series) rather than a sequel game (which is obvious).

The demo that was available only allowed two stages to be played, but there's no way to know if that's meant to be a reflection on the final game or if the other stages just weren't finished/available at that point.

Yeah, by "sequel", I meant "Not a Mega Man X or ZX game set a billion years in the future with bizarre play mechanics as a result." It is, of course, a sequel to the core Mega Man series, but that's self-evident, as you pointed out. =)

(Not that I have any problems with MMX or ZX, but they were both series where core gameplay felt very different than the old 8-bit ones I grew up with.)

The demo pretty clearly doesn't reflect the final game in any way. In the demo you could only pick two stages, and even if you made it to the Robot Master at the end you didn't get to fight him.

Einherjar

The Demo only allowed two stages, but had a classic Mega Man setup that strongly implied that all your choices will be available from the beginning.
