I don't think anyone saw this coming. A title released by a brand new developer about goo has turned out to be one of the best WiiWare games available. Yet, it's happened. World of Goo is a fantastic game, showing that you can make a full, original game as a digital download.
World of Goo is a very unique game. It basically involves putting goo together to reach a pipe that sucks them in. However, it's not as simple as just stacking goo on top of each other. To successfully reach the pipe, you must make your goo tower architecturally sound. If the foundation isn't solid, or if there is more goo on one side than the other, the goo will fall over. The pipe isn't always on top of the level. Sometimes, the pipe will be on the side, and you'll have to use balloons to keep the goo up while forming a bridge. Each level is truly different from the last, taking plenty of thought and strategy to complete. Adding more of a challenge, you have to put a certain amount of goo through the pipe, so if you use too much goo making the structures to reach the pipe, you won't have enough goo left to complete the level.
A lot went into this game. It could have just been over a white background and been great, but there are many different themes ranging from cliffs to snow covered environments. All of them look great and make World of Goo come alive. What really shocked me was how outstanding the the music is. The tunes are very catchy and well-recorded, matching the theme of the level. World of Goo isn't a short game, either. There are over 45 levels which can take quite awhile to complete, as World of Goo isn't a walk in the park. You'll have to learn the intricacies of the goo to be able to successfully create the structures, and because the levels are so diverse, you constantly have to adapt new strategies.
Not only is World of Goo a changeling puzzle game that adults will eat up, but it's also incredibly cute. The goo seem to have personalities of their own and make adorable noises. Kids will love this game as much as their parents, making World of Goo a game for everyone.
I was honestly shocked about how good this game is. When I found out it was an independent project made by only two guys that didn't even have an office, I was simply amazed. World of Goo is a big accomplishment in indie gaming and is truly a game no WiiWare owner should be without.
