The NPD figures for 2008 always said one thing, over and over: Nintendo was selling ridiculous amounts of DSes, Wiis, and first-party software to play on 'em. Seeing the pie chart above was still a total shock. Based on 2008's NPD data, Nintendo is claiming it's responsible for 99% of all growth in the industry in 2008.
This claim is so ridiculously over-the-top that it's hard not to think that Nintendo is making it up or at least exaggerating it somehow, but as near as I can tell (for now) the math checks out. The industry grew a mere 19% from 2007 to 2008, down from a whopping 43% fromm 2006 to 2007. Blame the economy for the slow-down-- but if not for Nintendo, things apparently would've been bad to the tune of no growth at all.
So, it looks like Nintendo basically won 2008, about as hard as any company can win anything in the Console Wars. Think they'll pull this off again in 2009?
