With total sales data in from 2008, the Nintendo hits just keep on comin' and making my head a splode. Want to know what's the top-selling game for 2008? The year that gave us a new Mario Kart, Fallout 3, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Grand Theft Auto IV?

It's Wii Play.

It's the game you only buy because it's the easiest way to find a second Wii Remote.

A $10 mini-game collection bundled together with a second controller outsold every single triple-A title that PC, 360, and PS3 could throw at us. If Halo 3 had come out this year, it would've outsold that, too.

Nintendo? You don't get to do this next year. You've sold a ridiculous number of Wiis in a very short time. Next year, your top-selling gamehad better not be a controller pack-in. It had better be something absolutely amazing.

Y'know, as many Wii's Nintendo sold that pretty much makes sense.

Kinda sad, though. Wii Play is pretty much just 'passable' to me.

I look forwardly to their hugely innovative Wii Play 2, which comes with a Wiimote AND nunchuck.

Will Wii Sports Resort count as a controller pack-in?

Wii Sports Resort I could see being a game that a lot of the people who buy Wiis genuinely wanting, though. Sword fighting, people.

That was my first thought as well. With the popularity of Wii Sports and the promise of Motion Plus (or whatever it's called), it would be shocking if anything else took top spot next year.
