The premise of Dead Rising is that Frank West, a photojournalist, heads into a zombie-infested hellhole to take pictures of the goings-on inside. Zombie battling does ensue, but also zombie photography. For some reason, this major plot element was revealed to be cut from the Wii version of Dead Rising earlier this week. Why cut something that's... you know, what the game is basically about?

Capcom's Minoru Nakai, director and producer of Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop, finally got the chance to give fans an answer in the latest episode of Capcom's official podcast, Top Secret. Here's what he had to say.

This is a very different game, gameplay-wise than the 360 version of Dead Rising. Another reason is the fact that the camera is quite different. In this version, the camera is very similar to what the players are used to in Resident Evil 4 - an over-the-shoulder camera that stays fairly tight behind Frank... [Photographing zombies] doesn't work so well with the tighter camera we have in Dead Rising Wii.

So basically: no photography for you, because the real point of this game is to see if we can squeeze another hit out of the RE4 Wii engine.

I'm starting to get the feeling that Capcom is shoveling all the failure they can into Wii Rising so they can make SF4 as awesome as possible.

Pfft, like SF4 needs the help. :V

Also I don't buy that excuse. RE4 has rifles. Make the camera control like a rifle without shooting.

Heyo! They need to hire me to keep them from doing stupid things.

There's also something in the podcast about the Dead Rising Wii zombies being "faster and more aggressive". So, Nakai says he thinks it would be too hard for players to set up shots.

This honestly still comes off as "yeah, you can't have shooting because the real point here is to recycle the RE4 engine, and Dead Rising features that don't fit that can go to hell."

Einherjar

But.. it would be easier to take shots because you literally point and click. Darn it, the photography feature was one of my favorite parts of Dead Rising! (Well, the Erotica stuff was a little creepy, but the rest was awesome!) It sort of defeats the point of Frank being a photojournalist if he doesn't take photos. He's covered wars, it shouldn't be that hard to take photos of shambling zombies, even if they are faster.

Ah well. The game just sounds more and more disappointing at time goes by. As Lynxara correctly points out, it feels like a cashgrab using Capcom's other zombie game and an easy-to-port engine... well, easy-to-port as long as you remove all the features that made it unique or interesting.

Wow, he actually said that? That I've gotta see. Because from all the promo videos I've seen they're not that much faster. And considering there's much fewer of them..

Yeah, I'm full of mad skepticism.

Lynxara

Yeah, he actually said that. I highly recommend listening to the podcast if you're any type of Dead Rising fan. The list of rejected names for Dead Rising along is worth your time.

(Oh, if only they had called the game "More Beef Life"...)

Yeah especially after playing the original. I love the Wii, but I still feel like Nintendo is forgetting about the core gamer with this. Rather then do something about it they just blame 3rd parties ( which is partly true ) for lack of effort. I want to like the Wii, but this makes it harder and harder. :(
