Time for another round of crazy sales figures, folks. NPD numbers have been crunched, and it looks like 49% of all video game software sold in the US in 2008 was for the Wii or DS. Sony comes in second with 32% of all software across the PS2, PS3, and PSP platforms, and Microsoft holds a formidable 19% with the Xbox 360 alone.

Nintendo's numbers state that about 132 million Wii and DS games sold last year, bumping the company's total share of the market up 15% from 2007. In an interesting reversal from what you're probably thinking right now, Gamasutra estimates that only about 60 million games from that figure are Nintendo DS titles. That leaves about 70 million Wii games sold in the US in 2007, and the Wii attach rate at about 6 games per console.

With people complaining now that Wii games don't sell well enough from third parties, could we actually see this number go up in 2009? Gamasutra estimates that about 57 million units of PS2 software sold in 2008-- territory that could very easily become Wii's in the future.

That's astounding. I don't think Nintendo has had this much of a market share since the SNES. Then again, I don't know for sure if they ever had that much. I never really paid attention to that stuff back then. I was a kid after all. ^^;

Nintendo actually had less market share during the SNES days. This is not quite as well as they did during the NES days, but there's more competition on the market now-- and everyone overall has an easier time selling video games.
