While Wii Play may have moved the most copies of anything in 2008, it's not exactly a new release, is it? If you're wondering which new game sold the most copies last year, then the NPD group has some numbers for you. This one totals sales numbers across all three major video game territories (North America, Japan, and Europe, in that order).
- 1. Mario Kart Wii: 8.94 million (5m/2m/1.94m)
- 2. Wii Fit: 8.31 million (4.55m/2.15m/1.61m)
- 3. Grand Theft Auto IV: 7.29 million (5.18m/256k/1.85m)
- 4. Super Smash Bros Brawl: 6.32 million (4.17m/1.75m/404k)
- 5. Call of Duty: World at War: 5.89 million (4.46m/0/1.43m)
Wii is once again the big winner here, with Mario Kart Wii taking top honors and Wii Fit coming in second on the strength of massive North American sales. Grand Theft Auto probably would have dethroned Wii Fit if it hadn't sold so poorly in Japan, though.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes in fourth, with strong sales everywhere but Europe, where launch delays probably lead to most folks importing from the US instead. Much like Wii Fit, it might have been dethroned if fifth-place champ Call of Duty: World at War had... well, been released at all in Japan.
