When the Wii's sales began to outpace the PS2's, I said that it was good because it would inevitably lead to a wider variety of games. It looks like Sega agrees with me, and is taking one of the biggest third-party gambles we've seen in awhile, and for that exact reason.

“The Wii has become this generation’s version of the PlayStation 2, reaching all parts of the market and selling tens of millions of units,” [Sega President Simon Jeffery] says.

This is Jeffery's rationale for why Sega is releasing three major hardcore Wii titles in 2009, with House of the Dead Overkill already on store shelves. The higher-profile MadWorld hits next month, and The Conduit in June. Now, you could argue Sega's probably banking on Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games to soak up any losses that come from those three titles... or you could argue that Sega wants to be the first third-party publisher ready with a solid slate of M-rated triple A titles to greet the massive new Wii install base.

Def a gamble given that the system has been labeled more of a kids system. I saw an article on AOL the other day that said something to the effect of "Nintendo no longer family friendly?" and it talked about HOTD: OK, Madworld etc. It's unfortunate that it has been labeled like that in the minds of some.

@DJKennethA:

The perception probably comes from the fact that Nintendo does most of the Wii-related advertising, and most of that is for their first-party titles-- which are pretty family-friendly! I think what we're really seeing is the mainstream suddenly realizing that people besides Nintendo are going to make Wii games, and freaking out.

I can agree with "suddenly". Need to dust off the Wii and pick up some new games :D
