I guess all of those hopes for a 'real' new Resident Evil game on Wii can now be quietly dashed. The latest issue of premier Japanese gaming mag Famitsu revealed the title of the next Wii Resident Evil, along with specs for the gameplay.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles will be an on-rails shooter that serves as a sequel to Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and takes place during the events of Resident Evil 2. We shouldn't be surprised by Capcom's decision here: Umbrella Chronicles is one of the few Wii games to move over a million copies worldwide.

The decision to set the game during Resident Evil 2 when Umbrella Chronicles already addressed a fair portion of the RE2 plot strikes me as a little odd, but maybe Capcom has some sort of twist or new characters in mind. They could also be planning to just do a straight rail-shooter adaptation of RE2, since what Umbrella Chronicles did with the game wasn't exactly a straightforward adaptation.

Hmm. If I had to bet, I'd say this is going to cover Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil Code Veronica... and then probably go out there and maybe do Gun Survivor or Gun Survivor: Heroes Never Die, and maybe Resident Evil 4. Basically all the stuff Capcom didn't bother to cover in Umbrella Chronicles. Plus probably some new stuff. Maybe they'll go crazy and give us a RE5 scenario too, since that's certainly built for a two player light gun remake.

This is pretty lame imo.. there are too many rail shooters on the Wii already. Not sure about sales, but if you look at reviews and general reception on forums across the board RE4 Wii Edition is the much more popular choice over Umbrella Chronicles. Unless sales were stronger for UC it makes no sense to produce another one.

A good game being released on the Wii from a non-shovelware developer? No... It can't be! Where am I? What year is it?
