Hey, remember the searing pain of knowing Japan had not only the complete Layton trilogy of games but an animated movie on the way, while we're waiting patiently for Nintendo to get around to releasing Professor Layton and Pandora's Box? Get ready to suffer more, North American Layton fans!

Scans from the latest Famitsu surfaced today, announcing the first game in a whole new Layton trilogy that will probably be completely released in Japan before we English-speakers ever see Pandora's Box. The new trilogy is set three years before the original games and is about how Professor Layton met up with his easily-impressed apprentice Luke.

The first game in the series is called Professor Layton and the Demon God's Flute and is about a "legend in which a giant destroyed a village." And presumably other things, but I'm waiting on a decent-resolution scan of the Famitsu pages to show up.

To be honest, the rate at which they're cranking these out worries me a bit. It seems like it should take more time to assemble a good puzzle collection, and I remember being a little bit 'meh' on the beginning of Pandora's Box (should play more of that). I'm sure the stories are fun (since there's only like ten minutes of one per game), I just hope they're not focusing on that to the detriment of the gameplay.
