DSi head developer Masato Kuwahara had a talk about the creation of Nintendo's new handheld at GDC today. It wasn't the most high-profile Nintendo event of the day but a very important bit of news came out of it: Nintendo already has games with features exclusive to the DSi in the works.

Called "Nintendo DSi enhanced game cards," these games will play in a basic way on the Nintendo DS but will contain extra features when played on a DSi. Kuwahara offers an example of what the extra features might be:

"For example," Kuwahara said today, "you will use these features if you want to create textures from photographs taken with the DSi camera."

In a game like, say, Animal Crossing, this could be a pretty big deal. This also pretty much paves the way for games that only work on the DSi farther down the line, too. Remember that the DSi's processor is actually more potent than the DS's. Eventually, developers will want to work that into their games.

So what's the word on the DSi's workability in overseas markets? Will I be shooting myself in the foot if I buy one here in Japan?

I think if you buy one in Japan, the only way region coding will affect you is that you'll only be able to buy Japanese DSiWare releases. Otherwise from what I've read a DSi is a DSi.
